Commercial email marketing messages on average are read on a mobile device 49 percent of the time, webmail 29 percent and desktop clients 22 percent. Some B2C brands see readership of 60 percent or more on mobile devices.

But, this mobile email readership growth comes with a price. For example, retailer conversion rates on smartphones during the 2015 holiday season averaged 1.51 percent compared to 4.29 percent on desktop computers. And while smartphones drove a whopping 40.5% of site traffic, they contributed only 14.9% of sales, though did surpass sales from tablets for the first time ever.

While most brands have focused on responsive and mobile-friendly email design techniques to address this “smartphone paradox,” these approaches, while foundational, clearly aren’t enough.

In this session email marketing evangelist Loren McDonald will use benchmark data and examples to provide attendees a strategic understanding of these shifts caused by mobile email readership, including context, device user behavior, touch screens, merchandising, remarketing, payment alternatives and friction in the purchase-process.
